Allison Hill EDUC 7101 Module 1 Assignment 1 December 16, 2012 Three Innovations up for Adoption Smart Notebook 11.0 Smart Notebook 11.0 is software created by Smart, the makers of the famous SmartBoard, to increase and enhance instruction and classroom efficiency. Smart Notebook 11.0 would allow both educators and students to take the simple functions of an interactive SmartBoard to the next level. It will allow educators to: excess over 50,000 [[#|learning resources]], make custom web-based widgets, and create talking avatars. Since my current place of employment already has SmartBoards, adding Smart Notebook 11.0 would not be hard at all. It would only take a matter of downloading the software, and maybe purchasing a few licenses. This innovation could get more participation from students and bring a teacher's lessons to life. A few barriers that may exist in diffusing the Smart Notebook 11.0 are: cost, availability, and teacher resistance. Although the school that at I work at has quite a few SmartBoards, not every teacher has one. This would mean not every teacher would have an opportunity to use the software, unless the school purchased more SmartBoards. This leads to increase in cost for the school budget. Also some teachers at the school consider themselves not to be “tech savvy.” Their idea of implementing technology into their classrooms is an over head projector. This will call for professional development and training on the software, as well as the SmartBoards. http://isteconference.org/2013/program/categories.php Global Collaboration Project The Global Collaboration Project is an activity for students to communicate with other students around the world to compare and contrast the differences in the standards and curriculum that they are learning. Global Collaboration Project would promote educational social interaction amongst students, expose students to different cultures and customs, allows students to develop reading and writing skills in a more comfortable setting, and have educationally based conversations. This may be difficult to adopt for the whole school, because of lack of the ability to partner all the students with enough students in other countries participating in the same type of program. Also the availability of computers to all students may also present another barrier. http://www.tennessee.gov/education/tetc/
Blogging in the Classroom Blogging in the classroom is a great way for students to develop their reading and writing skills. It increases their ability to type and form sentences. It allows peer collaboration, mediation, and feedback from other student bloggers. It allows students to express themselves while using a learning tool at the same time. This is extremely important skill for students to develop since the state writing assessment has recently become a timed typed test. This should be a fairly easy innovation to adopt at the school; because it is a skill that the teachers have to prepare the students for the test anyway, this is just a creative way of doing so. http://www.tennessee.gov/education/tetc/doc/Wed.pdf Out of the three innovations, blogging in the classroom would probably be the one with the most benefits in the middle school where I work. The reason I chose this innovation is because it would be the most beneficial at this given time. With the recent changes in the writing assessment, it would be the perfect solution to means of preparing the students for the writing assessment. It would allow them to practice typing, help them develop their writing while receiving feedback, also put them under time constraints with the class changes, and provide them with a variety of topics to write on. This will open the communication channels amongst the teachers and students, as well as between the students and their peers. Over time the students will improve their craft of writing and well as reading, while improving their ability to blog. According the Ellison and Wu (2008), blogging in the classroom has had positive effects on both student attitudes and student comprehension. Blogging was also noted to create computer based learning assignments to meet learning objectives. Blogging was used as alternative to writing assignments and journal entries. Within the students’ comments of blogging, students mentioned and contributed learning of instructional material through the use of blogging. Ellison, N., & Wu, Y. (2008).
